RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Scripture Focus
As Catholics, the scriptures of Jesus’ life and the parables Jesus told act as a guide to support Catholics with examples of how to live out the values of integrity, justice, compassion and hope. For the second half of this term Holy Cross has the scripture focus of the “Parable of the Lost Son” from Luke’s Gospel. In this scripture story the father forgave his son even though he had wronged him. He showed compassion and justice even when this was not easy to do. We are encouraged to be like the father and forgive those who wrong us and be people of compassion.
The Parable of the Lost Son
Luke 15:11-24
Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.
“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.
Book Week
Children’s Book Week was celebrated from August 19th to 25th, with the theme "READ, GROW, INSPIRE." Holy Cross students marked the occasion by dressing as their favorite book characters on Friday, joined by teachers in a collective celebration of the joys of reading. A school parade added to the festivities which also involved crafting a special 'reading potion' symbolising the transformative impact of reading. Gratitude is extended to the community members who participated and contributed to the day's success. The students had a fantastic day.
Confirmation
The Sacrament of Confirmation remains a focus for our Year Six students, who are diligently preparing for this important sacrament. As they progress on their faith journey, our thoughts and prayers are with them.
We extend a warm invitation to all to join us for the celebration of Confirmation, taking place on Wednesday, 13 September, at Holy Cross Church, starting at 6pm.
An Invitation to Sunday Mass
Holy Cross Parish would like to extend a warm invitation to all our beloved school families to join us for Mass on Sunday mornings at 8:30am.
Attending Mass as a family is not only a wonderful opportunity to strengthen and nurture our faith but also a chance to deepen the bonds that unite us as a parish, school and a wider community.
Some things you may not know:
- Sunday Mass goes for one hour, 8:30 - 9:30am.
- We regularly gather for morning tea and a catch up afterwards.
- Every second week we have a children's liturgy which enables our kids to build some great friendships and learn about their faith.
We look forward to welcoming you and your family at our next Mass as we come together to celebrate the gift of faith and the joy of community.
