STUDENT LEARNING SPOTLIGHT
SPOTLIGHT ON MATHEMATICAL LEARNING
This term our Kindergarten students have been working hard on understanding and representing numbers. We have been using a variety of manipulatives (Hands on materials) to show how amounts and collections can be represented and to deepen our knowledge with verbal reasoning (being able to explain our thinking and working out). We have learnt how to use rekenreks, an arithmetic frame that assists us with visualisation and combines features of a number line and counters.
Year 4 have been learning how to use scaled instruments to measure so that we can compare lengths in both mm and cm.
We have been very successful and have created some abstract shapes that we could measure and display in the classroom.
We have also been learning how to recognise and represent numbers that are 10, 100 or 1000 times large.
We are certainly thinking like mathematicians and enjoying our maths activities each week.
